The vines are emerging from their “chia pet” look, as canopy management is well underway. Buds and shoots emerge from many extra points on the vine, not just the buds intended to carry the year’s crop.

With the recent warm weather, green leaves are bursting out all over Napa, as budbreak is in full swing. Last week in our Larsen Carneros vineyard, Chardonnay was out 3-4”, and there were some shoots at 6” with baby clusters appearing.

This morning in the pre-dawn hour, I heard the first rumblings of wind machines in Napa, a sure sign that the tender new buds are emerging from the dormant vines, and a new growing season is underway. Welcome vintage 2009!
